Young sport teachers create toolkit to promote sports

AJITER - Youth Association of Terceira Island, and AJFB - Youth Association of Fonte Bastardo, were partners during this past week, in an Erasmus+ Sport project, which brought a group of 27 young people from Portugal, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Greece to Terceira Island. During an intensive training week, the youth group carried out a series of activities aimed at creating a support manual for European coaches working with young athletes. The project is entitled “Sports4Life: Non-Formal Toolkit for Grassroots” and took place between the training room of the Youth and Arts Academy, in Praia da Vitória, and the Porto Martins Sports Pavilion, where AJFB has carried out the training of most of its training teams.

According to AJITER's president, Décio Santos, and responsible for the implementation, “Sports4Life” project constitutes a new challenge for the association, representing a significant investment in international sport. This is an area in which AJITER has been working in recent years, always seeking to encourage young people to practice sports and adopt healthier lifestyles. The “Sports4Life” project is the result of a partnership created between the two associations AJITER and AJFB, with three other European partners, Champions Factory (Bulgaria), Solidarity Tracks (Greece) and Active Youth (Lithuania).

The project wants to place the island of Terceira on the sports map of Europe, encouraging sports practice in the youngest, through the training of coaches from the four countries of the project. For this, “Sports4Life” is creating a toolkit with activity suggestions and advice for coaches who want to encourage school-aged children to practice sports, the result of the training week that took place on Terceira Island, between March 9th and 13th. Throughout the week, the 27 young coaches participated in a set of activities and workshops based on non-formal education techniques, built in order to allow each participant to take an active role in their learning process. In addition, visitors had the opportunity to get to know the island better, visiting Algar do Carvão and Furnas, the Rocha do Chambre Trail and participating in an intercultural night.

Teaching sport
The idea of the “Sports4Life” project is to help coaches create a taste for sports practice in the youngest. To this end, a group of young coaches joined Terceira Island to create and test a set of activities and tips that will compose the manual that will result from the project. This manual will then be shared by the network of each partner and on the results platform of the Erasmus + program, in order to reach as many coaches and youth workers as possible. This manual will contain the results of the various stages of the project: a preparation meeting, which took place on the 23rd and 24th of January on Terceira island and the intensive training for 27 coaches that took place at the AJFB facilities. It will also include the collected data of an online questionnaire that collected responses over the last month.

As a partner specialized in sport, AJFB contributed with the availability of trainers, space and training equipment, as well as with fundamental knowledge in the area. AJITER is responsible for coordinating the project with the financing entity, the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency - EACEA). This is a project financed by the Erasmus+ Sport mobility program, through its Small Collaboration Partnerships subcategory. More information on the initiative's results and work can be found on the website and networks AJITER's social media, or through the project's website, sports4life.online.
