Young Azoreans in Guadeloupe against Marine Pollution
A group of four young Azoreans from the islands of Terceira, Faial, and São Jorge formed the delegation of AJITER-Associação Juvenil da Ilha Terceira (Terceira Island Youth Association) that attended a youth exchange on the French island of Guadeloupe, located in the Caribbean region, , in a youth exchange under the theme “ECOWAVE: CONNECTING SHORES FOR A GREENER TOMORROW,” between February 16 and 26, as part of the European mobility and learning program “Erasmus+.”
EcoWave addressed marine pollution and coastal sustainability, providing young people from Latvia, Guadeloupe (France), Spain (Tenerife), Portugal (Azores), and Malta with practical skills in conservation, digital storytelling, and teamwork.
The project strengthened ecological literacy, cultural competence, and inclusion, while aiming to build a transnational network committed to protecting marine ecosystems.
Its goal was to transform awareness into local action and long-term cooperation across Europe and the Caribbean, with a special focus on the outermost regions of Europe.
Through non-formal education, field actions, and intercultural collaboration, participants learned to create actions and practices aimed at promoting community involvement and sustainable tourism.
The group was led by Angela Chumbinho and also included André Pereira, Tânia Picanço, and Daniela Tristão.
Since 2012, AJITER – Associação Juvenil da Ilha Terceira (Terceira Island Youth Association) has been strongly committed to promoting the Erasmus+ program on Terceira Island and in the Azores in general, offering young people this type of mobility experience with learning objectives.
In addition, AJITER is also part of the European network EURODESK, providing information and opportunities for young people in these areas at its facilities. With more than 20 years of work on behalf of young people, it will continue to develop these efforts.
